HAITIAN ARTS FAIR

Haitian-American teen is company CEO

Leanna Archer is one of dozens of people taking part in the Women in Production trade fair and marketplace at the Miami Beach Convention Center this weekend.

Leanna Archer, 15, holds her original product, a hair cream, which she decided to produce at the age of 9. On Friday, June 24, 2011, she shows it off at Women in Production, a show that showcases handicrafts and fashion made by Haitian women, at the Miami Beach Convention Center, 1901 Convention Center Drive.

Haitian-American Leanna Archer was nine years old when she was bitten by the entrepreneurial bug.
Now at 15, she is chief executive of Leanna’s Inc., a hair products company that is expected to gross around $600,000 this year and offers 14 products. Her wares are among the handcrafted products on display at “Women in Production,” an artisanal fair featuring Haitian and Haitian-American women at Miami Beach Convention Center. The two-day event is open to the public Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Haitian First Lady Sophia Martelly presented awards Saturday and snipped a ribbon to open the event. A number of the women entrepreneurs are getting back on their feet after last year’s devastating earthquake and the event was an opportunity to recapitalize their businesses and to meet distributors and long-term buyers.
Martelly said the women “represent one of the very many treasures that Haiti has to offer.’’
Archer’s entrepreneurial story started with her great grandmother’s secret formula for hair pomade, which includes oils and essences of avocado, sweet almond, rosemary and hibiscus.
When she was little, people in her Islip, Long Island community kept asking her, “What does your mother put on your hair?” It tamed her curls and made the hair shiny but didn’t weigh it down.
“Whenever my great grandmother sent a shipment from Haiti, I put it in Gerber baby food jars and shared it with people,’’ the teenager said. “But then orders started coming in. My mother had a full-time job, so I decided to do it myself. I’ve always had a tenacious personality.’’
“Leanna knows what Leanna wants and she figures out how to get it,’’ said Maritza Valcourt-Archer, her mother.
The business has blossomed so much that four years ago her father quit his job to help her out.
Plus, Leanna was getting invitations to appear at forums like “What Makes a Young Champion?” in Singapore and couldn’t travel alone, said Valcourt-Archer.
Now Leanna’s Inc. has become something of a family business with relatives and friends pitching in when Leanna needs help, said her mother.
Leanna still imports the essential oils she uses from Haiti. Once she tried getting them from Hawaii. Her customers could tell the difference, she said, and she stopped.
Last year revenue topped $100,000, but so far this year sales have more than quadrupled after Leanna’s began selling internationally, said the teen entrepreneur.
Archer has the distinction of being the youngest entrepreneur ever to ring the NASDAQ opening bell and has been interviewed by network TV as well as profiled in magazines such as Forbes, Inc. and Ebony.
She’s also become a motivational speaker and her Leanna Archer Education Foundation provides daily meals for 140 children in Haiti.
One of those Leanna has motivated is her grandmother, Evelyne Valcourt-Romane. Her mother Emma — the same woman who supplied the formula for Leanna’s hair pomade — was famous for making teas from organic herbs. Valcourt-Romane carried on the family tradition.
“She [Leanna] inspired me to start a business,’’ said Valcourt-Romane. “Finally she said, ‘Nana, I’m doing it; you can do it too.’ ’’
Now Valcourt-Romane has a line of bottled teas — ginger lemon, red rosebud and hibiscus — called Emma’s Deity.
The Miami Beach trade fair and marketplace, which is organized by the Haitian nonprofit Femmes en Démocratie and the Haitian American Chamber of Commerce of Florida, is designed to revive the creative industries of Haiti after the 2010 earthquake and to increase production among women of the Haitian Diaspora.

How to deal with staff commitment issues:BY SIMON REILLY

The first thing to do is lead by example by having a vision, mission, objectives, strategies and action plans and one can do this by creating a one page business plan. This plan translates the standard elements of a business plan into five simple, universal questions:
  • Vision: What are you building?
  • Mission: Why does this business exist?
  • Objectives: What results will you measure?
  • Strategy: How will you build this company?
  • Plans: What is the work to be done?
Your next steps are to have your team set their goals, acknowledge what they are doing right, make requests for what they need to change, offer support where needed, and to follow up in 30, then 60, then 90 days while letting the team know about the rewards for taking action and consequences for not taking action.
The 30-60-90 day model is like “one, two, three strikes you’re out” when requests are made but changes are not made.
The above must be documented to create a paper trail of reward and accountability to those that are performing or not performing. In the absence of this documentation, one lacks clarity about the situation and could feel responsible for the lack of commitment and action of others.
At the same time, in the absence of documentation about what the team member is doing right and what they need to change, your mind may have a tendency to focus on all the negatives and with the negatives in mind, one cannot possibly see what the team member is doing right.

Social Media Strategy: Part I: 7 Steps Overview

The Parable Of The 3 Golden Rocks! by PAUL CASTAIN on JUNE 22, 2011

Once upon a time, in a sales cubicle far, far away, a Sales Manager put forth the proclamation that the contents of two buckets must be combined.
In one bucket, there were three, big golden rocks that were said to hold the secret to sales rock stardom!
In the other bucket . . . golden sand that wasn’t as valuable as the golden rocks but still necessary for one to achieve total sales kick assery.
The first group of sales reps approached the buckets, took the rocks and tried to force them into the bucket of sand. They pushed and they pushed with all of their might but failed miserably.
The second group approached the buckets, studied them and simply poured the golden sand over the golden rocks successfully combining the contents.
This group not only lived happily ever after, they consistently made quota and became sales rock stars.
This parable, as corny as it is, symbolizes your world.
The idea of combining contents into one bucket is your day to day and all the things you must get accomplished within that one day.
Not an easy task!
The 3 gold rocks are the 3 main things that drive your success within your role.
In sales, the 3 golden rocks are:
New Account Acquisition
Account Development
Account Retention
The “Golden Sand” is all your administrative activities that must support your 3 golden rocks.
Things like:
Emails, generating quotes, internal meetings, reports etc
When we think about the first group approaching the bucket and trying to force the rocks into the sand . . . . they represent the bulk of the population. We continually get bogged down on the administrative things and try to force the true money activities into our day, around the administrative stuff.
Kind of gets you nowhere fast!
Sound familiar?
What if we properly planned our day around the activities that drive our business and poured the administrative stuff around it? It changes the outcome dramatically because you not only get more out of the day, you approach each day by scheduling the stuff that matters . . . FIRST!
A logical question might be “How the heck do I do that?”
That will have to wait for another day because it’s a premature question.
The first question you need to ask yourself is “What are my 3 golden rocks . . . the 3 biggest, most important things I need to do every freakin day to drive success in my role?”
So what do the “3 golden rocks” in your bucket represent?

'Jesus Knows You're Here": A funny joke! You'll get a real laugh from it!!

Jesus Knows You're Here"

A burglar broke into a house one night.
He shined his flashlight around, looking for valuables when a voice in the dark said,
'Jesus knows you're here.'

He nearly jumped out of his skin,
clicked his flashlight off, and froze.

When he heard nothing more,
after a bit, he shook his head and
continued.

Just as he pulled the stereo out so
he could disconnect the wires, clear as a bell he
heard 'Jesus is watching you.'

Freaked out, he shined his light around frantically,
looking for the source of the voice.

Finally, in the corner of the room, his flashlight
beam came to rest on a parrot.

'Did you say that?' he hissed at the parrot.

'Yep', the parrot confessed, then squawked,
'I'm just trying to warn you that he is
watching you.'

The burglar relaxed. 'Warn me,
huh? Who in the world are you ?'

'Moses,' replied the bird.

'Moses?' the burglar laughed.
'What kind of people would name a bird
Moses?'

'The kind of people that would name a
Rottweiler Jesus.'
